Bio:
“Mad” Olin Juenoaelie, the son of two diplomats from Evermeet, was tutored in the druidic arts by Wooglor and Go, a dwarf and a treant. His parents, who had envisioned a less restive future for him, implored him to return to elven civilization, but the combative Olin stubbornly made his home in the Chondalwood and rebuffed their many attempts to drag him to Silverymoon (where they were most recently sent as envoys.) Before Wooglor’s death in battle, he had taught Olin to wield the maul, an un-elven weapon if ever there was one, and so Olin relied on his stout, four-foot hammer to protect the woods of the Chondalwood from ravagers from Torsh and elsewhere. While nominally a member of the Emerald Enclave and a devotee of Silvanus, both the Silvanusian clergy and the Enclave found him too “independent” (cranky) to be of much use. So he spent several years watching over the Chondalwood from the treetops, teaching himself the ways of water, wood, and weather.
Eventually, Olin came upon two travellers, Eban and Taeron Xandros, as they made their way from Torsh to the Orcish colony at Brazhago. His interest piqued, Olin followed them to make the axquaintance of Orzht and the residents of the embattled enclave. While Olin had no love for those who harmed the forests, he also found that Orzht and his fellows seemed to live in closer harmony with the forest around them than the nearby humans did. He was curious about the intentions of the gnomish and dwarven Khalad-Araga and the elders of Torsh, and one thing led to another; soon Olin found himself fighting on the side of the orcs and goblins. He was particularly moved by the plight of Groshn-Irkh, an orcling who was now the only survivor of the wrath of Lothrim, the man who had hired Taeron and Eban in the first place. He swore to protect Groshn-Irkh with his own life, and so it happened that Olin escaped Brazhago through the underground labyrinth with his two new friends, baby in tow.
Olin and his two friends made their way out of the mine and away from the Khalad-Araga by coming into contact with a godstone, a mythical rock which transports those who touch it to another world. Using these stones, Taeron, Olin, and Eban (and later Nemo) would hop from world to world, trying to uncover the meaning of the Books of Leng, determine the will of the gods, and stay one step ahead of the forces of Panaga, Nephren-Ka and Lothrim, until finally, 42 years in the future, he returned to Faerun with his friends to find it horribly changed.
—
The text of the speech Olin delivered to the Thaymount Conclave, at which it was ultimately decided that the Champions would proceed to a nearby Godstone to jump worlds yet again, while the representatives of the deities there assembled would attempt to conquer Nephren-Ka’s Mulhorand:
My name is Olinrae, or Olin, from House Juenoaelie of Silverymoon. I have traveled with my companions here, Eban and Taeron, for some time. During that time we have proceeded from world to world through a kind of projection of the soul during which our consciousness persisted from self to self. It is hard to explain because I do not understand it myself, but my companions and I have discovered that it has fallen to us to stymie forces which wish to end the existence of the Nine Worlds, the only planes of existence left to beings in this universe. These forces are led by Lothrim, the leader of the Silver Empire, who has usurped the rule of my people, and the people of my companions. My compatriots and I are in the awkward position of appearing before you to urge you to make war on our own nation. But this is what you must do. Let me explain to you my own motives, and how we can best address the twin threats of Mulhorand and the Silver Marches.
One of the places my companions and I traveled was a world called Harn. On this world was a place called Araka-Kalai, in which lived a god known as Ilvir, or the Brooder. He dwells in a mysterious pit into which climb pilgrims; those who enter never leave. In this world, the Brooder is the maker of the Ivashu, creatures that many here would call the monstrous races. “Ivashu” also has a broader meaning, though; the word encompasses any being of humility, any being of vulgar or base origins. The faith of Ilvir exists to explore the meaning of creation, in particular Ilvir’s creation, and to protect the Ivashu from harassment, revering them as fellow beings.
I became a novice of Ilvir while on Harn, as I discovered within myself awe at the created being, awe at the power to bestow and design life. When my friends and I returned to Faerun through a fortunate accident, I discovered that Ilvir answered my prayers even here, bestowing power across worlds. I carry with me and preach my belief in the sacred nature of all life and particularly the Ivashu, with whom I consider myself one.
My companions worship their own gods, namely Sune and Nave. We differ in matters of theology, but we speak in one voice when it comes to what Faerun must do. We cannot allow our own world to fall into Lothrim’s hands. We know that Lothrim seeks to end this plane of existence, but if he could already do so, we have no reason to believe he would have held back. He has sought to persecute some Ivashu with whom we have traveled, hunting them down with unmatched fury. We believe that control of these Ivashu, who are orcs and goblins, might somehow aid him in his goals. He must also need to expand his worldly power in order to carry out his nefarious plot. But there is still time to deny him what he seeks.
The destruction of the nine worlds would mean the dimunition – or even demolition – of all of the gods, as well, yours and mine. Insofar as we are all charged with the task of protecting our own faiths above all else, we cannot allow Lothrim to succeed. A powerful Lothrim would mean enslavement at least and destruction at worst. It is incumbent upon all of us to take this truth back to our churches and also to the secular authorities. There can be no meaningful belief if there are no believers; no gods without worship.
It is better, as Taeron pointed out, to allow some of our fields to lie fallow, to leave some work undone than to allow our homes and peoples and churches to be destroyed altogether. But what specifically can we do in order to support the resistance against the twin empires? My friends and I endorse the following steps:
1. We must implore the gods themselves to make war on Lothrim and Mulhorand. Mulhorand in particular possesses its own pantheon eager to stamp out worship of others. They are not henotheists as we are, but instead believe that their own deities take precedence over those of Faerunian origin (let alone Harnic gods such as Naveh and Ilvir.) To them, worship of gods other than their own is an obscenity. Unless we wish to see our worldly efforts amount to nothing, we must protect our own divinities and exhort them to act on their own behalf and our own.
2. We must each free our own slaves, and having given them their freedom, invite them to fight alongside us as free citizens. This may be the most difficult task for us to accomplish, but consider: Lothrim has sought to hunt down and execute nonhuman Ivashu for his own purposes, whatever those are. He has not yet succeeded in conquering or destroying any of the Nine Worlds. It stands to reason that if he could have achieved his purpose he would have by now. The Ivashu he has sought are instrumental in his plans, though how we do not know. All beings on Toril should be free to fight for their own prosperity and survival. When a slave’s master’s farm is put to the torch, does not the slave then die? But could he not have stayed the hand that torched the farm? Few, I think, will voluntarily join Lothrim, who hunts down Ivashu like they were dogs. But with this single, swift act of renunciation we may both discern our friends and vanquish our foes.
In any land where Ivashu may be bought or sold, an Ivashu may also be set free without penalty to he who frees it. I hereby pledge all I have save what I can carry in my pack; whatever is left over I will spend buying others’ slaves freedom and freeing them to help our cause.
I acknowledge that this step may sound difficult, but consider: it is Shieldmeet, and by the time most of you arrive home, the fall harvests will be over. Your slaves, your Ivashu, will be preparing for the winter. You will have to feed these mouths as you always have to keep them alive until spring planting. If we can mold Ivashu freed at the end of harvest into small, mobile guerilla units, we can begin to cut off trade to and from Silverymoon and perhaps even dispatch a few squads into Mulhorand by late winter or early spring. The industrial shortfall suffered can be borne, if we encourage our peoples to take up their own ploughs, or hire others to do so. Not to mention the moral cost, the monetary cost of keeping idle slaves who could, with training, make passable saboteurs or irregulars is too high, particularly when each nation’s own formal armies may be needed to defend its homeland.
3. We must sign accords with Ivashu tribes and communities, conditionally guaranteeing certain rights and privileges in exchange for their assistance in the war on Lothrim and Mulhorand. This may even extend to seigneural rights. Remember, no cost should be considered too heavy to bear for the perpetuation of the Nine Worlds and the continuation of our faiths.
4. We must send representatives to the other eight worlds, in an attempt to alert them (and their priests in particular) to the threat that Lothrim and Mulhorand represent to them and to us. We may also gather useful reconnaissance concerning the extent of Lothrim’s invasion. That Ilvir himself grants me powers through his divinity is evidence that the Harnic deities have power here. We might do well to bring other pantheons to bear on our problem, being that the destruction of the Nine Worlds would affect all the gods. You may not wish to crowd Faerun with even more immortals, but remember, any step that we take will, in the long run, appear preferable to total annihilation. If I am right, and we do not take every step together, there may be no one left to judge us retrospectively. There are difficulties that one faces when one steps from world to world, but these may be surmountable with divine intervention or magic.
I suspect that the resolutions most opposed here will be the second, the freeing of slaves, and the third, alliances with the Ivashu-born. Consider, though.
There are already several Armies of Free Toril, and they have met with mixed success. Lothrim and Mulhorand have still managed to acquire territory and power because simply mounting an army in defense does not harm them. Even if they lose troops, they may recover with conscripts gained through conquest elsewhere. What would harm both Lothrim and Mulhorand irreparably is warfare against smaller units spread out over vast territories who could be relied upon to destroy trade and harass through sabotage any troops who moved nearby. Armies must be fed, but Ivashu live by scavenging, and ten squads of twenty scavengers each who can feed themselves by hunting or very occasional resupply, and who may forbid a route to caravans, are a better army against a much larger, expansionist force under internal political pressures than ten thousand regulars dressed in full plate.
There are plenty of able commanders among us and among the Free Armies. Let us commit to this plan: we will encircle both Mulhorand and Silverymoon and besiege them with as many squads as possible of no more than twenty each.
Each can be commanded and trained by four or more regulars, numbering as follows: three priests of different priesthoods who act as healers, as checks and balances against each others’ priorities, and as liaisons with some larger organizing headquarters; a single person culled from the Free Armies, intended for training only, in accordance with the agreed-upon goals of the squad; and any freed Ivashu with a military background who can aid in planning the tactics of the entire squad, whether those be poisoning water frequented by enemy troops, destroying and looting supply trains, planting caltrops and snares, or by picking off scouts one by one. It is very important that all decisions affecting the squad should require a strong majority, if not unanimity, so that each squad may break into smaller, autonomous groups as needed, and also so as to prevent any single faith’s interests from overwhelming the others’.
Each squad will be given an area of a few square miles to cover, and will have only two standing orders: to retreat rather than risk engagement, and to do as much damage to enemy infrastructure as possible. Some squads, if they penetrate far enough into enemy land, can sap the enemy’s will by burning their crops. Such a plan may sound cruel, but we did not ask for either war, with Lothrim or with Mulhorand. A wise man once said “never start a fight, but always end it.” And that is what we must do, and the plan I have set forth is how we may do it at a minimum of expense to ourselves.
